Brattleboro, VT, December 5, 2007 — The Meeting Waters YMCA has received a $600,000 gift from the Thomas Thompson Trust to its You Are Y capital campaign. The campaign is a locally-led, volunteer effort to build a regional YMCA facility in Brattleboro.
According to Campaign Co-Chair Marcia Steckler, the Thompson Trust’s large gift reflects belief in the project’s potential for serving the entire greater Brattleboro region, especially through its partnership with Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. As she points out, “The Thompson Trust was instrumental in building Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in 1904. We are delighted that the Trust is playing a similar role for the Y’s new Brattleboro branch facility, supporting efforts to expand health and wellness services in our regional community.” The Meeting Waters YMCA has served the region since 1895 and has always insured that programs are accessible to everyone.
Steckler’s co-chair Rick Fleming feels that the award from Thompson Trust gives the campaign another big boost as he and the other volunteers continue to work in the Lead Gifts phase. He points out, “With the gift of land from Winstanley Enterprises, our partnership with BMH, strong financial commitments from the dozens of volunteers that are behind this project and, now, this generous gift from The Thompson Trust, we have a lot of momentum going into this most-important phase of the campaign.”
Once built, the new YMCA facility will significantly expand the outreach and services of Meeting Waters YMCA in Windham County and neighboring communities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. It will create a third branch of the Meeting Waters YMCA, complementing work done from its Bellows Falls and Springfield facilities, as well as through satellite sites up and down the Valley.
